About Us

Afenifere, meaning “lovers of progress” in Yoruba, is a socio-political organization founded to promote the interests of the Yoruba people of Southwestern Nigeria. The group traces its ideological roots to the Action Group (AG), the political party formed in 1951 by Chief Obafemi Awolowo, a visionary Yoruba leader and Nigeria’s first Premier of the Western Region. The AG championed regional autonomy, educational development, and the creation of a welfare state.

Afenifere emerged formally in 1993 during Nigeria’s struggle against military dictatorship, particularly in response to the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, widely believed to have been won by Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola, a Yoruba businessman and politician. The annulment ignited strong reactions from the Yoruba political class and led to renewed activism for democratic governance and Yoruba rights.

The group quickly positioned itself as the voice of the Yoruba people in the democratic movement. It became closely associated with the Alliance for Democracy (AD) political party, which was dominant in the South-West in Nigeria’s return to civilian rule in 1999. Afenifere emphasized federalism, minority rights, and restructuring of the Nigerian state along lines of true autonomy and equity.

Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, Afenifere faced internal divisions, generational shifts, and ideological tensions, with splinter groups and competing Yoruba advocacy platforms emerging. Despite these challenges, Afenifere remains one of the most influential Yoruba socio-political organizations, consistently advocating for restructuring, democratic reform, and Yoruba unity.

Today, Afenifere continues to play a significant advisory and advocacy role, often issuing policy positions on national matters and collaborating with other regional and national groups to shape Nigeria’s democratic evolution, while defending the Yoruba cultural and political identity.
